The Canto a Tenore is the most ancient ethnic musical expression of central Sardinia and is one of the most remarkable examples of polyphony in the Mediterranean area. Of extremely ancient origin, most certainly dating back a thousand years, its roots lie in the solitude of the mountain pastures and the close continuous relationship of the shepherds with nature; nowadays it is considered to be one of the artistic expressions that most ideally represents the idyllic rural world that was characteristic of Sardinia during thousands of years of cultural isolation.
