BARUMINI – Il Villaggio Nuragico Su Nuraxi

""Su Nuraxi" of Barumini"

Su Nuraxi di Barumini is the most complete example of the nuraghi that existed all over the island of Sardinia but nowhere else. These were circular defensive towers, truncated cones of dressed stone with corbelled internal chambers. Some, as here, were situated inside a protective ring of smaller towers and connected by fortified walls. The first central defensive structures go back to 1500 - 1800 BC, built by clans living in isolation. Towards the end of that period, Nuragic society became more sophisticated; outlying towers added architectural features for both social and defensive purposes.
Between the 10th and 8th centuries BC defences were strengthened all over Sardinia because of Carthaginian invasions. The population sought safety living near these fortresses, which became fortified villages of soldiers and craftsmen, with chieftains who offered protection, like in mediaeval times. Most of the homes were stone dwellings with only one room.
